About Eureka Gear
Eureka Gear recommends the best sports, fitness, health, outdoor and travel gear for your needs and budget, and directs you to where you can buy it at a fair price.
Eureka Gear is supported by our readers through affiliate commissions
Our buying guides make it quicker and easier for you to decide what the right gear is for you and your interests.
To do this we research, test, compare, review and recommend the top products.
We do the leg work so you don’t have to spend too much time on those steps, but can still be confident you’re selecting and buying the best value, and most useful and reliable gear.
We hope this means you have more time and the right gear to enjoy sports and the outdoors, stay fit and healthy, and travel to inspiring destinations.
Eureka! Moments
Eureka! The word often ends with an exclamation mark, to emphasise the euphoria of discovery.
Eureka Gear might not give you those dizzying highs. But we can help you find and buy the right gear for you, so you can experience your own Eureka! moments.
We want to help you have Eureka! moments while keeping healthy and happy with water and snow sports, testing your fitness and capabilities in events like fun runs and cycling sportives, embracing the outdoors through camping and hiking, or travelling to discover new cultures and adventures.

Why We Do It
Our Mission
Eureka Gear makes it quick and simple to find and buy the best sports, fitness, outdoor and travel gear, to encourage and support our readers to live an active and healthy lifestyle.
Our Values
Our values and guiding principles include:
Readers first
Our priority is to guide our readers to make the right purchase decision for their needs and budget.
One way we do this is by providing information you can trust; with accurate, independent and unbiased reviews and recommendations.
We don’t sell any gear ourselves, or receive payments from the manufacturers that make the products we recommend (we only receive small payments from some retailers that sell it, as explained more below).
Practice what we preach
If we wouldn’t use a product ourselves, or be happy to buy it for family and friends, you won’t see it on Eureka Gear.
A high price on value
Sports, fitness, health, outdoor and travel gear can be expensive. So, if you’re like us, a purchase decision isn’t just about price – it’s about value.
When testing and reviewing gear, its value – the price of the product compared to its features and quality – is an important consideration in whether we recommend it in a buying guide.
Some guides include several products at a range of prices, so you can decide what is right for your needs and budget. But we consider all of the gear recommended in our guides to be good value for their features, function, design and performance.
Majority rule
We focus on recommending the best gear for most people.
This is because we want to encourage and support people to live an active and healthy lifestyle, and seek out new experiences and adventures. We don’t need to give pros advice on which gear will shave seconds off their personal best, or to tell social media influencers the on-trend brands to feature in their Instagram stories.
So while we sometimes recommend different gear for specific circumstances and budgets, we don’t go out of our way to focus on the products with the most features, finest finish or biggest price tag.
How We Do It
We know what it’s like to spend too much time searching Google and reading multiple product review websites, then comparing ratings, reviews and prices on Amazon and retailer websites.
And that doesn’t even guarantee that you’ll know what the top products are to choose from, let alone what is right for your needs and budget.
That is why our experienced writers, researchers, testers and editors use their time and expert knowledge to select, research, test, review and recommend the best gear.
Gear selection
We usually start by making a list of the most popular and promising brands and models in each product category, then consider our own experiences, suggestions from friends and colleagues, and anything else that might be relevant.
We also make sure we know about any new products or features that seem useful or interesting.
The number of products that we shortlist to research, test and compare varies. But all products in a category are selected, tested and reviewed by us in the same way.
Manufacturers (and retailers) sometimes provide us with gear for testing and reviewing, but we do not receive payments from manufacturers to include their products in our tests, reviews or buying guides.
Research and testing
While we read about and discuss different products when deciding which ones to shortlist for further review, in-depth research and testing ensures we understand more about features, function, design and performance.
We carefully consider any relevant scientific research, market studies or other analysis from respected sources.
We talk to industry experts, staff in retail stores and people who have used a particular product.
We may also look closely at user surveys, and feedback and reviews on Amazon and retailer websites.
Our hands-on tests look into how easy it is to use a product, how it is designed, how well it performs, and how durable it is. Wherever possible, we quantify these findings.
We also compare and contrast the features and function of each product in a category.
We make sure that the gear we test is the same as the gear you can buy. And we aim to carry out tests in the same conditions as you’re likely to use the product in.
Reviews and recommendations
Our detailed reviews and recommendations consider and compare price, design and style, features and function, reliability and durability, and overall performance.
We usually review several different brands and models, and explain the pros and cons of each.
We also make clear what we think is the best gear for most people, and recommend a product for some relevant circumstances, so you can more easily decide which gear is right for your needs and budget. We regularly review and update each buying guide on Eureka Gear, so that they’re always relevant and useful.
Affiliate Commissions
Eureka Gear is supported by our readers through affiliate commissions.
We often link to Amazon and online retailers, so you can quickly and easily buy the gear that we review and recommend. When you follow a link to Amazon and make a ‘qualifying purchase’, as an Amazon Associate we may receive a small payment as an ‘affiliate commission’. We have a similar arrangement with some online retailers.
Any commission we receive from a retailer does not affect the price you pay to them.
It also doesn’t affect how we review products or decide which gear to recommend, especially as we only receive a commission if you buy a product from a retailer, are satisfied with it and then keep it. We want to earn your trust and loyalty, with accurate and unbiased recommendations.
Who We Are
We are joggers and trail runners, cyclists and bikers, climbers and hikers, swimmers and surfers, skiers and snowboarders, campers and glampers, backpackers and... #vanlife dreamers.
We are experienced writers, researchers, testers and editors who happen to also be passionate about participating in and promoting sports, fitness, health, the outdoors and travel.
Most of us already use some of the gear that we recommend. But we’re also looking for new interests and adventures, and – perhaps like you – use Eureka Gear to find out what to buy to get started.
Where We Are
We are based in Sydney, Australia.
But our collective experience also includes long periods living active and healthy lifestyles in Europe and North America.
